I want to ''clean'' my hard disc my portable P.C, How exactly ?

I currently own a Toshiba Satellite series A-100 ( it's 2 years old, never had a problem and I regularly renew my virus protection, which is McAffee ) .

I have noticed that when I try to watch a d.v.d or listen to music on a c.d, it runs slow and the sound is distorted.

I was told it was due to the fact that my p.c needed ''cleaning''. True ?

Anyway, as the hard disc is not large in capacity, I bought a Lacie 250 Giga external hard disc.

Would it be ok to pass ALL my programmes to this hard disc in order to ''clean'' my p.c and then reboot my p.c, finally re-installing all my programmes and files, music etc to my p.c ?

Many thanks .

Think of your computer like a file cabinet. In the top drawer are your program files and in the bottom drawer are your data files. As time passes you are constantly accessing both drawers, removing file folders and using the contents inside of them. Sometimes you are so busy that the file folders just keep stacking up on your desk. When you are finally through working you must put the file folders away again. But you are tired so you decide to just put them wherever they fit in the drawers. You can see how over time the folders become out of order and you start to find it difficult to locate the folders. It takes you longer each time to remember which drawer they are in and where within the drawer they are actually located. Eventually you will need to clean out the drawers and reorganize them in order to work efficiently again. This is the same thing on your computer.
